On any given day, a Quantity Surveyor may be reading architectural drawings to determine what a construction project may cost; obtaining and reviewing quotations from subcontractors; assessing cost effects if changes to a project occur; or working on-site to make sure costs and production are managed as efficiently as possible.
In a fast-moving industry, it is important our Quantity Surveyors understand the client brief, can work to tight deadlines, and can work together well in a team.
Just one pathway into Quantity Surveying is through a Cadetship. At Maycroft Construction we currently have 6 cadets – 2 in Quantity Surveying and 4 in Project Management. Supported by a Training Supervisor, Mentor, and the Maycroft Leadership Team, the programme is centred around providing the knowledge and experience to build future leaders of the construction industry.
Typically ranging between 30 – 36 months, our formal cadetship programme is structured to provide learning opportunities on all aspects of either Project Management or Quantity Surveying. The programme also includes other key modules on Maycroft operation; Health & Safety, Leadership, Programming, and Quality Assurance to name a few.
Oliver Hurley, a recent graduate of our Quantity Surveying Cadetship says through his cadetship he was able to develop more specific skills and a better knowledge of the industry.
Oliver has been with Maycroft since early 2015, when he joined us he was helping on our construction sites while working towards his National Diploma in Quantity Surveying. He has since completed this qualification in addition to a NZ Diploma in Construction Management and now a Maycroft Cadetship.
“It was interesting learning about parts of the business you wouldn’t usually get to see. Part of the Supervision and Site Management module is to ‘Be Actively involved in the site set up/establishment of a project’. In 2017, I spent 6-weeks on site with our Site Manager. We set up the site fencing, created all the profiles to set out the gridlines of the building, tied some of the reinforcing for the footings to the basement slab, completed health & safety inductions of subcontractors and multiple other on-site bits and pieces. You could say I got my hands dirty and I learned how to use some powertools.
My interest in a career in Quantity Surveying with Maycroft was based on the opportunities that I could see there would be. There is such a variety of work and you get to work with lots of different people. By being involved in different projects, there’s always something to keep you busy.”
