Weltec’s new School of Construction consolidates all trades associated with the construction sector together on one site. This environment provides students with an invaluable opportunity to be involved in all parts of the construction process, including carpentry, painting, decorating, masonry, tiling, plastering and landscaping.
Maycroft Construction were pleased to continue our relationship with the Wellington Institute of Technology as appointed Head Contractor of the new build. Completed in February 2015, this project was a Design and Construct contract that included full delivery under a Guaranteed Maximum Price contract.
The finished school has flexible, open plan workshops that can accommodate future teaching trends and a large ground area to build up to six houses simultaneously from start to finish. On-site teaching is the main way students learn carpentry and landscape construction, delivering real time skills valued by the industry.
The School can accommodate up to 220 students and staff at any one time. The site is ideal for students as it has easy access to all the main transport routes and is close to the Petone Railway Station.
The site presented considerable challenges for Maycroft. No soil could be removed from the formerly contaminated site, so we needed to decontaminate and build up the existing site before construction. The site is also bound by the highway and the railway lines, so site access, safety and staging challenges had to be carefully planned.
Maycroft also met the challenge of designing and building the School in a very short period of time. It was delivered on time thanks to Maycroft’s integrated systems for project delivery.
