Palmerston North’s population is expected to grow by 15,000 over the next 25 years. In preparation for this growth, the city is investing in a number of significant infrastructure projects, including an upgrade to the power supply.
We worked with electricity provider PowerCo to deliver a new 33kV substation in central Palmerston North, which will help secure the city’s power supply for the future. The substation, which is located on the corner of Linton and Ferguson Roads, houses new transformers and associated switchgear information.
The new substation was constructed from insitu concrete and block walls. A removable roof provides access to transformers for maintenance and upgrades.
The project, Maycroft’s first with PowerCo, provided plenty of challenges to keep our team thinking. Located in the centre of the city, and with a number of deep excavations (some up to two metres deep), vigilant planning was essential to keep our team and the public safe.
We worked closely with PowerCo throughout the build to ensure that the finished substation meets their service needs. During the tender phase, we produced beneficial cost savings for PowerCo by recommending alternative products.
